We focus on the negative aspects of ourselves, those things we want to change, rather than the positive aspects. We may say something like, ?I wish I didn?t eat so much? or ?I wish I had Audrey Hepburn?s sense of style.? In this article, I am going to walk you through a couple of exercises that I hope will be eye-opening for you and give you a better idea of how to become the person you want to be.

Find Role Models.

Make a list of at least 30 people, real or fictional (characters from books, movies, theater, TV, etc.) that you admire. Write them down quickly and without editing. They might be a teacher, a character from one of your favorite books, a relative, friend, an acquaintance, athlete, spiritual leader or entertainer. After you have made your initial list, put it aside and let it percolate. As new names come to mind, add them to the list.

We all need role models in our lives. Part of the need for role models is for the inspiration value?they help us draw out the very best of ourselves. But we also need role models because much of our learning in life is done by observing others and then trying out the behaviors for ourselves. If we are fortunate, we have direct contact with our role models and they can mentor and guide us as we develop into the people we want to be.

The list of people you admire are the people who are your role models. As you go about your day, ask yourself what a particular person would do in that particular situation. This strategy has helped me tremendously when I am unsure of how to proceed in a situation or if I bungled something and want to learn how to avoid making the same mistake again. For example, Leonardo da Vinci is one of my role models. Whenever I am stuck on a problem, I remember that he encouraged people to examine things from multiple perspectives. Once I get out of my tunnel vision and look at the problem from a different viewpoint, a solution usually presents itself. My paternal grandmother is another one of my role models. She seemed to ?have it all??a strong faith, loving family, and career (and an immaculate home!). There are many overwhelming days when I want to collapse onto the floor and lie in a fetal position but then I think about my grandmother and all that she endured in life and I find the inner strength to do what I need to do. Who are your role models?

Character Traits:

Take your role model list and make two columns. In the first column, write the names of your role models. In the second column, write the reason you admire them?what traits do they possess? For example, for my grandmother, I would describe her as spiritual, grounded, fun, organized, giving, open, curious, intelligent, satisfied with living simply, loving, determined, kind, doting, etc. A couple of traits that I admire in my husband would be loving, amazingly creative, funny/fun, sincere, generous, intelligent, and so forth. As you did with the first list, set it aside and let it percolate (and it will!). As new traits come to mind, add them to the list.

The next step is to make a list of the traits that you have listed. Put tally marks after traits that occur more than once. You will start to see a pattern developing. These traits are the ones you want to possess. The more often it is listed, the more strongly you want to have these traits. Reviewing this list will give you a better idea of who you want to be, how you want others to view you. Who do you want to be?

What Traits You Possess

Take the list of traits you developed in the second exercise. This is where the real self-examination starts. Reviewing the list, ask yourself objectively which ones you currently possess. You may be startled to discover that you already have many of the traits! If you are really serious about wanting to be the person you want to be, ask a trusted friend or family member to highlight the traits on the list that s/he believes you possess. Hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that you are closer to being the person you want to be than you thought. The traits that are not highlighted are now your roadmap?you now know what traits you need to focus on in order to develop them. Who are you now? And, what do you need to develop to become who you want to be?

A final word:

There is an old proverb that says that birds of a feather flock together. The value this proverb has for the exercises you have just completed is that if the people you spend most of your time with do not have the traits you want to develop within you, then it will be very difficult to grow into the desired traits. This is also true of the things we watch or read. For instance, if you want to lose weight and all you do with your friends is go out to eat, then you are not going to lose weight. Also, if you belong to a weight loss ?support group? on the Internet and all people do is complain about how hard it is to eat right and how they went off of their meal plan, then, again, it is going to be hard to lose weight. However, if you are part of a group that holds each other accountable for letting themselves down for overeating, then you will lose weight. Do you want to be like the people you hang around with or watch on television or in the movies? Is it time to move on to a group or source of entertainment that has a better fit with who you want to be?

A new habit takes 30 days to form, which means in 30 days you can either start a new bad habit or change a bad habit into a good one. If you have ever tried to change a bad habit such as be more organized, eat better, or start exercising, you probably tried to do it all at once and failed. A war is won by winning many battles, if you want to win the war on your bad habit, let’s start by winning little battles.

You know the routine, you say to yourself; “from now on I’m going to be more organized, I’m going to eat better and start exercising. I’m going to start on Monday and I’m going to do it this time!” Monday comes around and you’re motivated to start your new good habits. You grab an apple and some toast for breakfast, you organize your desk, and you take the stairs, you started off right, but as the day winds down you find yourself falling back into some of the old habits, maybe you hit the vending machine in the afternoon, soon you take the elevator again because your just too tired, by the end of the day you’re back to square one.

Why does this happen? You say to yourself I just can’t stay disciplined enough to change what I want to change. The answer is you are trying to change too many things at once, remember little battles mean little victories.

So today , not tomorrow or next week , pick one small thing you want to change, for example keep an organized desk. That is going to be your focus for the next thirty days. Don’t worry about diets, exercise, or anything else. Everyday before you leave be sure to clean off your desk. Trust me it will pay off in the morning when you walk in and have a clean slate to start on.

Now take this and apply to every other thing you want to change, except only do one thing at a time. Remember little battles. If it’s a diet you want to change start by changing only one meal in the day, breakfast for example. Rather than trying to change your entire eating habit at once, start with one meal. Do that for 30 days, by the end of the 30 days, if you have been having something healthy like grapefruit, it is very unlikely that you will go back to something fattening such as bagels or bacon. By this time your body won’t want it anymore, when your battle with breakfast is won, now its time to attack lunch.

The plan I have laid out is not a quick fix solution, there rarely are. Bad habits form over time and so it takes time to undo them and form good habits. One day at a time, in 30 day succession and you can overcome anything.

If you are like me, you find yourself interested in almost all subjects. While you can’t be an expert in everything, you can learn about a lot of things you otherwise would know very little about.

The trick to learning about new areas, subjects, or fields is to get involved with them. More specifically, write about what it is you want to learn. When you are forced to write about something, you generally have to have a decent understanding of the subject in order to express your point in writing, thus learning in the process.

Think about lawyers, many of them become semi-experts in many fields. For example, to prosecute a criminal case a lawyer needs to know about forensics, bullet trajectory, and the psychology of criminals to name a few.

So if you want to learn about something, force yourself to write about it. Let’s say, you want to know more about the history of the United States. Well, the first thing I would do is get a couple of books (having varying sources always helps). Next I would start my own blog (blogger is a good place to start). Why a blog you ask? Well, if you have a blog, you can potentially have an audience and if you have an audience it is more likely that you will be more thorough in your research.

Speaking of audiences, learning new things is made easier if you imagine you have to teach it to some one. This is why the blog component is very important.

The same rules apply if you want to learn more hands on things such as fixing a car. Explaining in writing helps you understand whatever it is you want to learn better because it forces you to really think about it.

Modern day culture and American culture in particular stresses hard work and long hours. We need only look at the bustling American economy to see the fruits of our labor. And what does it take to work so hard? More energy.

Fighting Fatigue

The number one thing that can hold us back from working longer is fatigue. Fatigue can be a sign of exhaustion; sometimes all we need to do is take a 15 minute cat nap in the afternoon to help energize us.

Drink More Water

Dehydration can contribute to fatigue. If your feeling tired, coffee can help but coffee can also be the culprit in causing dehydration. Next time you feel fatigued, drink 2-3 glasses of water and you’ll notice a quick pick me up.

Quick Exercises

Go out for a short brisk walk, the combination of walking and a burst of fresh air is sure to reignite your alertness.

Stimulate More Adrenaline

Adrenaline is what gives us that flight or fight rush. Even though we don’t want something so exhilarating, a little stimulation to the adrenal gland can go a long way in fighting fatigue. Open either one of your hands and about 1 inch below your middle finger, there is a round bone. Rub it in circle motions for 20-30 seconds at a time in each hand and this should pump more adrenaline.

Sleep

Finally, if you are feeling fatigue all the time it usually can be remedied by sleeping more.
