Virtual Privacy

Encryption technology is used to allow public networks to be made virtually private. Thus, Virtual Private Networks or VPNs are the communication sessions traversing these networks. They are defined by the creation of a firewall rule that requires encryption for any session that meets specific criteria. Encryption only takes place between the initiating computer and the firewall and not between the firewall and the target system.

A VPN can be established when the firewall and the client device are both prepared to use the same encryption technology such as proprietary and standard-based. Firewall-based encryption would typically require user authentication before the session can proceed. The use of this technology would ultimately depend on the user’s diligence and risk tolerance as routers that are already on the network can also block traffic. But the server and workstation software should be updated with the latest security patches to reduce any risk of a successful attack.
