The most frequently reported form of Internet fraud is the fraudulent schemes appearing on online auction sites. These schemes and similar ones typically purport to offer high value items that are most likely to attract many consumers. In the process, these schemes would induce interested buyers to send money for the promised items and in return would send an item far less valuable than what was promised or worse, deliver nothing at all.
There are two ways to reduce the chances of being victimized by fraudulent online auction or retail sales schemes. First is by doing a careful research of the perspective seller’s background and performance. Second is by paying with the use of a credit card or escrow service whenever possible. Although nothing can absolutely protect a consumer from a persistent fraudster, the opportunity to minimize loss, if any, should not be ignored.
