Every year around this time, many people get into a reflective mood thinking about the past year. And every year we make resolutions about things we are going to change. Personal goal setting has become a cliche’ among corporate America, so-called life coaches, and unmotivational speakers everywhere. Here’s how I deal with resolutions, so sit back and enjoy a good cigar (unless your resolution is to quit smoking, in which case it should be cigarettes your quiting , not cigars).

First, you have to really not focus on it. I know this goes against everything you have ever been led to believe but I’ll give you an example.

Up until recently, I had never been to a cigar lounge. My cigar smoking consisted of lighting one up with a beer or drink on the weekend after doing some grilling. Recently, I was taking a stroll with the old lady after dinner at a Bonefish Grill restaurant (the one located out west in Tamiami Trail) here in Miami and as we walked down the shopping center we saw a cigar lounge-cigar store.

From the moment you walk into any cigar lounge, you then realize that there is a huge difference with what most call cigar smell, we cigar aficionados accurately call cigar aroma.

The place was really cool, for lack of a better word. The owner greeted us as soon as we came in and let us look around for a bit without hounding us. The cigar bar also served wine and beer and there was a huge walk-in humidor. I can’t remember the name of this place, but it was a real treat considering it was in the middle of a shopping center. I bought myself a Macanudo and proceeded to sit down in over-sized chairs while watching a football game on a wide screen.
Some tips on smoking a cigar at a cigar lounge:

  • Buy your cigar there
  • Bring your own only if your a member
  • Cigarettes shouldn’t really be smoked in a cigar lounge

Remember above all the owner is there to make money.

Golf is a mental game, for me, convincing myself to get up away from the computer and out in the green is tough to do. Golf is not a game of perfect shots, but obviously the better you hit the ball the more likely it is you’ll win, luckily there are handicaps. For me, the idea of golf has always had a certain allure about it.

Seeing many successful people indulge in it, has no doubt played a role in my wanting to play more. What is it about golf that successful people find appealing? Or is it the other way around? Does success lead to palying golf? I think it has become a mix of the two, business on the golf course has been a staple of upper class America for a long time. Some of the biggest deals in corporate America have been made while teeing off.

But before I strike any major deals on the golf course, I first have to improve my game to level acceptable beyond that of a newb swinging away (and missing sometimes) on the driving range.

Dewars Scotch

The commercials you hear on the radio for Dewars are usually those for the Dewars 12, a blend of whiskies which is aged, you guessed it, 12 years. However, after being haggled by a friend to try Dewars I went out and bought one of each, a Dewars 12 and A bottle of Dewars white label.

I was expecting the Dewars 12 to be the better of the 2 , since it is more expensive and supposedly better overall. Now, I have to warn you I’m not a whiskey connoisseur , nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn express last night. But I know what I like and Dewars white label was better than Dewars 12. Dewars 12 was a rough around the edges, and put up a real fight going down.

The Dewars white label on the other hand was smooth as silk and went well with a Macanudo Maduro.

In the end, If I want an expensive whiskey I’ll stick with Pinch.

The new year usually begins with a hangover, but after that we have resolutions we attempt to accomplish. Some people do go through with what they have set out to do, but most find themselves right back to what they were doing before. Let’s see, some of the common resolutions are diet, exercise, and stop smoking-this last one should have an asterik next to it. You should stop smoking cigarettes, so that in 6 months time after your palate is clean and your addiction is gone you can then start enjoying cigars, more on this in other posts. With that out of the way, let’s get to a resolution that gets overlooked for too many people, investing money in the new year.

Investing money, can mean different things to different people. When I say “investing money”, some might think of adding to your 401 k, others will think of opening up a savings account. Investing money is a strategy that should be taken as seriously as running your own business. Below I’m going to out line how to start investing money.

1. 401 k Plan Retirement

Make sure you are contributing to this, if your employer offers it. If not, then open up a roth IRA with any number of brokerage houses such as t rowe price or merril lynch on line. Alternatively, you could go with a cheaper version of the two, scottrade.com . Investing in a 401 k is basically investing in mutual funds, but with the added benefit of having your employer contribute (free money) to your account. In the end, and I can’t stress this enough, if your company offers a 401 k and you are not taking advantage of it, you are committing the biggest money investment mistake of your life.
2. Investing money in mutual funds

Mutual funds are a great way for lazy investors to make a decent amount of money on their money. As I mentioned above, when you invest, keep in mind that simply because you are investing money into a mutual fund doesn’t gurantee that you will make money. If don’t want the hassle of figuring out where to invest your money, do this; call your broker and tell him you want to put your money into a blue chip index fund and forget about it.
3. Day Trading Stock Online

If your entire porfolio was $100k, I would use no more than $5k for day trading. Actually, what I do is not really day trading , but short term trading. I look around for a stock that has some momentum behind it and invest a month or so before earnings come out. Usually I try to gauge the mood behind the stock, it has so far worked well for me. Although, I only use about $2k for this type of speculation. I say speculation, becuase when you are dealing with stocks in the $1-$2 dollar range, there is literally no rhyme or reason to the company and it is usually in bad financial shape. The hope with these stocks is that enough people think they can make money on a short rise and therefore money gets pumped into it and volume goes up and more people invest, so the price goes up. Watch out though when everyone takes their profit, it will sink 50% in a weeks time. With short term investing, you have to have discipline to take your profit or loss and run. I usually set it at 20 % either way.
Other thoughts:

If you browse through websites dedicated to investing everybody says you should invest money according to your age. The older you get the more conservative you should invest. To me, this really only works for the non-investment thinking person. Why is that? Because it’s not really about age, but about personality. If you are the type of person that looks at their 401k account everyday and starts sweating the moment it goes south, then you need to invest conservatively all your life, not just when your old.

Investing money for the New Year, you should also think about emergency savings account.

Tomorrow is Christmas, and what am I getting for Christmas? Probably the same old same old. Not that I’m complaining, but why is it that people insist on giving the same things year after year? Clothes, ties, underwear, etc… they all fit this category and don’t get me wrong , these are useful items (except the tie). But, I find that people are hesistant to give Cigars or a bottle of whiskey.

Why is that? Are they concerned we might say something or that it isn’t appropriate. Are you kidding me, if someone in my family did get a fine cigar as a present, I would hug them and kiss them with excitement.
